New Law For Solar Electric ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 26, 2010 Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a law requiring utility companies to buy a percentage of their electricity from solar-generated sources by 2015. The law says utilities must purchase a half-percent of their electricity from solar power by June 2012. The mandatory percentage doubles each year, until reaching 6 percent in 2015. [Full Story] |
Mosquito Update ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 26, 2010 The mosquito population seems to be down from the year’s high point a couple of weeks ago. That’s the assessment of Phil Nixon, entomologist for the University of Illinois Extension, though he doesn’t have hard numbers to support his observation. Nixon says rain caused the population of floodwater mosquitoes to swell two weeks ago, but they don’t live long before being eaten by dragonflies, spiders, bats and birds. [Full Story] |

Still No Appointment for Monken ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 26, 2010 After 18 months, Illinois State Police acting director Jonathon Monken (pictured) is still holding out hope that the state Senate will vote to confirm him. School Zone Crack DownWBGZ Radio | Aug 25, 2010 Alton Police were on the lookout for speeding motorists in school zones on Tuesday, but instead wrote more tickets for drivers on their cell phones near schools. It's against the law to be on a cell phone while in a school zone or to be texting while driving, and 14 motorists were issued tickets for the offense yesterday.[Full Story] |
Ragusa Sentencing Delayed ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 25, 2010 Sentencing for a South Roxana man convicted in a 2004 murder will have to wait a little longer. James Garrison was set on fire in late 2004, and later died after suffering burns over two-thirds of his body. 45-year-old Joey Ragusa of South Roxana was convicted of murder about a month ago, and was supposed to be sentenced tomorrow, but the defense successfully requested a continuance. Airport Receives Grant ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 25, 2010 The announcement of a federal grant to purchase a new aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle is good news for those associated with St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto. Incidents don't happen very often, but for some, a crash about 15 years ago is still fresh in their minds. An F/A-18C military fighter crashed in a residential area of Bethalto in 1996, killing the pilot. It is a scenario that airport officials are prepared for, in case of emergency.[Full Story] |
24-Hour Challenge ![]() WBGZ Radio | Aug 25, 2010 Students at Bethalto's Trimpe Middle School have about a month to train for this year's 24-Hour Challenge. For many years, the Trimpe Middle School Physical Education staff has been promoting physical fitness, and this is one way they challenge the kids to get up and get moving. Saddler New Quinn Chief Of StaffWBGZ Radio | Aug 25, 2010 Governor Pat Quinn has named Department of Human Services Secretary Michelle Saddler as his new Chief of Staff. Saddler takes over for Jerry Stermer, who stepped down over the weekend in the midst of an ethics scandal.
