The Green Party candidate for governor of Illinois says he has no baggage – except for the momentum to beat Republican Bill Brady in November. Rich Whitney, who received 11 percent of the vote four years ago, told statehouse reporters Monday he should be able to appeal to supporters of incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and to those who consider themselves “Eisenhower Republicans.” He says the far-right conservatives who would support Brady – the state senator from Bloomington – are not going to vote Green anyway. The Race to the Top is over, and Illinois did not win. The U. S. Department of Education has announced nine other states, plus the District of Columbia, will share the federal stimulus dollars for school reform. State Superintendent Chris Koch, speaking to reporters on a conference call, said while he is disappointed, there is great value in preparing the application.[Full Story]
DUI Deaths Down in Illinois

Fewer people are dying in drunk driving accidents in Illinois, according to state transportation officials. He says that's because more people are buckling up, and cops are cracking down on drunk drivers. Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson Josh Kauffman says the state saw a 16-percent drop in DUI fatalities between 2007 and 2008. [Full Story]

Ahead of the new school term, the Illinois Attorney General’s office is giving teachers a crash course in “cyber bullying.” Sarah Migas, an internet safety specialist on the attorney general’s staff, teaches teachers how to recognize signs of “cyber bullying,” sexting and other actions that could hurt a student’s social life. Corn Harvest May Begin Soon  This News Story Contains Audio

Corn growers in Southern Illinois may be in the fields harvesting as early as this week. Statewide, corn is estimated at 13 percent mature, according to the weekly USDA Crop Progress report. Crop statistician Brad Schwab says much of that is in Southern Illinois, where farmers were able to plant two weeks earlier than in the central and northern parts of the state. He says he wouldn’t be surprised if the corn harvest began in earnest this week. [Full Story]
NEW: Moro Boil Order Lifted

The Moro Water District has lifted a boil order that went into effect Monday morning. A spokesman with the water district says the order was in effect as a precaution due to maintenance work, but the order has now been lifted. [Full Story]

Alton Police issued the warning last week, and now are cracking down on speeding in school zones. Traffic officers were out in force on Monday and plan to be out again today, to make sure drivers are not driving too fast near local schools and making sure they are not talking or texting on their phones while they are in a school zone.[Full Story]

Disease has infested the greens at one of the area's premier golf courses. Major re-sodding will have to be done at the Spencer T. Olin Golf Course at Gordon Moore Park before they become playable again, according to the course's Superintendent, Michael Beckman. He says there is no way to clean the turf of the bacteria, but it can be managed.[Full Story]
Saving Jobs At Olin  This News Story Contains Audio

Last week's announcement that Boeing was moving a portion of its operation to MidAmerica Airport was tempered by the news that about ten times as many jobs as that would bring to the area could be lost if a major manufacturer leaves for another state. Olin Corporation is considering moving its Winchester Division, Centerfire Manufacturing Operation to Mississippi in an attempt to cut costs. Local and state leaders are teaming with union leaders to try and save those jobs.[Full Story]
