The Alton School District will welcome students back to class today. It's just a half-day, but it's the start of a routine once again for parents and kids, and new times for everyone to get used to. It's back to school time around the Riverbend, and all area police agencies will be stepping up patrols in school zones. The hope is to keep drivers on their toes in order to avoid potential tragedies. Sergeant Richard Gillespie, Traffic Safety Supervisor with the Alton Police Department, says while much of the responsibility is on the drivers, the kids need to share the responsibility for staying safe.[Full Story]
MidAmerica Announcement Tomorrow

Not much is being said yet, but some of the heaviest of the heavy-hitters in Illinois Politics will be on hand tomorrow for what is being called a major announcement at MidAmerica Airport in Mascoutah. The facility has had several false starts over its brief history, with a couple of commuter airlines pulling operations, and a cargo operation that has seen some success. U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello has reportedly been working on this deal for five years.[Full Story]

Wood River Police were holding 20 year old Ty Hillig of the first block of 4th in East Alton, held for battery. 31 year old Nichole Simons of the first block of Carrol Wood in Wood River held for suspended revoked drivers license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.[Full Story]
Arch Grounds Redesign Contest

Forty-nine teams entered the international competition to re-design the grounds surrounding the Gateway Arch, but only five remain. The CityArchRiver 2015 foundation have picked the five best designs, and will now put them on display for the public to see. A winner of the design competition will be named in about a month. The results of the just-completed sales tax holiday won’t be known for a while. There’s anecdotal evidence that the first-ever sales tax holiday produced increased sales in Illinois stores, says Gov. Pat Quinn, who chewed over the issue with the Illinois Retail Merchants Association. [Full Story]

Last week’s brutal heat and humidity helped improve the Illinois crop progress. USDA Crop statistician Brad Schwab says while we humans disliked last week’s weather, it was good for crop growth and maturity. Schwab says the expected cooler temperatures and lower humidity this week will be ideal for the corn crop.[Full Story]

Towns Lining Up For FutureGen

Now that the city of Mattoon is out of the picture for the proposed FutureGen clean coal power plant, other local towns are lining up for a shot at becoming the carbon storage site for the project. The South Korean ambassador to the U. S. found a friendly audience in Caterpillar Inc.'s hometown Monday. Peoria was the stop on a Midwestern tour for Ambassador Han Duk Soo. He toured a Caterpillar plant and spoke to a Chamber of Commerce gathering as part of a campaign for passage of a Korea-U. S. Free Trade Agreement.[Full Story]
