ISP: Don't Break Windows to Rescue Dog

Story by WBGZ Radio

The Illinois State Police have some advice if you see a dog left in a hot car. Don't take matters into your hands. It is illegal in Illinois to leave a dog out in extreme heat.

But Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Jason Bradley says it'a also illegal for you to break a car's window to rescue a dog.

Bradley says Illinois has a humane care law that makes it a crime to leave animals in the extreme heat or cold. But you have to prove an animal is in real danger to act, and he says just seeing a dog in a hot car isn't enough.

Leaving a dog in a hot car can be a misdemeanor crime, but Bradley says breaking into a car certainly is a misdemeanor.
