Monday Fires in Alton and Godfrey

Story by WBGZ Radio

Local fire crews battled flames and the frigid temperatures last night in two calls in Alton and one in Godfrey. Firefighters were called out to a vacant home in the 1200 block of State Street and a fire in an apartment in the 900 block of Oakwood in Alton and the 7500 block of Humbert Road in Godfrey. No injuries have been reported.

Godfrey fire crews responded to the fire on Humbert around 6pm, and damage was reported to be minimal. Alton crews were called to the fire in an apartment in the 900 block of Oakwood a few hours later, but it was limited to an exhaust fan in a bathroom.

Several crews on that scene left and reported to the larger fire in the 1200 block of State Street where Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells The Big Z a suspicious fire started in the basement of a vacant home.

That fire remains under investigation by Alton Police and Fire investigators. He says while it is classified as suspicious, that doesn't necessarily mean it was intentionally set. Sebold notes it could have been a product of someone seeking shelter from the cold, but there is no evidence at this point to indicate if that was the case.
