Bridge Cameras Installed

Story by WBGZ Radio

With just a few more tweaks, the license plate reader cameras now in place on the Clark Bridge will be fully operational. The cameras now installed, and supporters contend they will help track criminals. Detractors say they will be used to collect information on law-abiding citizens.

While the cameras are currently recording, if footage was needed, the city would have to contact St. Louis Police to download the footage. Alton Police Chief Jake Simmons tells The Big Z he expects to have the equipment fully operational by the start of next week at the latest.

The Godfrey Village Board and Madison County State's Attorney's Office will share in the cost of the cameras. Alton officials have repeatedly stated the cameras would not be used to collect data and sell for commercial purposes.
