Edwardsville to Allow Backyard Chickens

Story by WBGZ Radio

Edwardsville has become the latest community in Madison County to allow backyard chickens. The Edwardsville City Council voted last night to approve an ordinance that will allow a trial period for the animals and a review of the plan in two years. The trial run will allow up to 20 permits to be issued.

The permit will allow a homeowner to house up to 6 hens in areas zoned residential, R-1. Both a chicken coop and a run will be required with the coop size limited to 50 square feet and 7 feet in height. The run must have a space of 10 square feet per chicken. A permit through the city clerk will be $50 per year, and the set-up must be approved by the city. Those living in a neighborhood with a homeowners association must also have the approval of the HOA as well as neighbors for the chickens. After two years, the city will review the ordinance and could expand it to allow additional permits. The vote to approve last night was 5-3.
