Leroy Emerick Dies

A long-time supporter of Riverbend athletics - softball in particular - has died. Leroy Emerick passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, at St. Louis University Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. He was 92-years-old.

Emerick served many roles in Wood River, including as the city’s mayor, a councilman and head of the recreation department. Current Wood River Park and Recreation Director Jason Woody tells The Big Z Emerick recently donated $8,000 to the department.

Emerick was heavily involved in softball, spending time as the senior vice president of the Illinois Amateur Softball Association.
