Public Schools Reboot Sales Tax Push

Story by WBGZ Radio

Madison County voters will decided on March 20th if they want to increase the county sales tax to help support public schools. The County Schools Facility Tax has already won approval in 47 Illinois counties, and is back on the ballot in Madison County after being struck down in 2011 and again last spring.

The ballot question proposes hiking the current county sales tax by 1-percent and if approved, Madison County Schools will benefit financially based on their student population. Bethalto Schools Superintendent Dr. Jill Griffin tells The Big Z an estimated 30-40% of sales tax revenue would be generated by visitors to Madison County.

This time, there is support from the Edwardsville School District, which the effort did not have last time. You can see how your local school district plans to use the extra money, if the referendum is passed, here.
