Push for Minimum Teacher Pay in Illinois

Story by WBGZ Radio

Some lawmakers in Illinois want to update a nearly 40-year old law and set a new pay scale for beginning teachers. Nationwide teacher pay has been in the news with strikes and walkouts and the Alton Education Association has threatened a strike if updated pay rates are not met by the district.

Democrat State Senator Andy Manar of Bunker Hill says that a law passed in 1980 setting beginning teacher pay to be a minimum of $9,000 to $11,000 needs to change.

The bill passed a Senate committee and now faces another vote in the chamber. Manar says a higher wage to start will attract more young people to the profession. Alton teachers and the district have a negotiation session planned again for this evening.
