Resource Officer Stops School Shooter

Story by WBGZ Radio

A police officer on duty at Dixon High School Wednesday morning stopped a young man who had opened fire inside the school while students were preparing for graduation rehearsal. The 19 year old suspect was later arrested and charged after he tried to flee the area but was shot and injured by the officer. Dixon is about 100 miles west of Chicago.

Illinois State Police report 19 year old Matthew Milby of Dixon, opened fire inside Dixon High School just after 8am Wednesday. Authorities say students were lining up inside a school hallway to practice for graduation ceremonies when the officer heard shots fired. Officer Mark Dallas confronted the suspect who then fled the building with the officer in pursuit. Police say Milby fired several shots at Officer Dallas who returned fire striking the suspect who was then taken into custody. No students, faculty or other officers were injured inside or outside the school. Milby is being treated for non-life threatening injuries and is charged with three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. The investigation continues as to why Milby, a former student, opened fire and where he obtained the gun.
