County Jail Plan Approved

Story by WBGZ Radio

Madison County Board members have unanimously approved a plan to renovate the county jail. $14.3-million will be spent on repairs and upgrades to the aging facility. County officials have been trying to get a jail renovation plan passed for most of this decade.

A 2012 petition drive forced the plan to a public vote where it failed, and in the years since, the jail renovations have been locked in a budget debate. The original plan in 2012 was for a $24-million makeover, with $19-million coming from the sale of bonds. Board member Mike Walters (R-Godfrey) tells The Big Z this work is long overdue.

Board member Michael "Doc" Holliday (D-Alton) tells The Big Z the work should begin soon.

Highland-based Plocher Construction will do the work, which is expected to take about three years to complete.
