Tornado Confirmed in Greene County

Story by WBGZ Radio

Photo courtesy of Dylan Robinson via NWSA small tornado touched down near Pearl, Illinois Tuesday evening, causing little damage in the mostly rural area. Several reports came in to the National Weather Service as the landspout tornado formed around 6:21pm at the intersection of two outflow boundaries.

The weak tornado slowly moved west-southwest across the Illinois River to Pike county. The direction is abnormal, as most tornadoes move in a west to east direction. National Weather Service Meteorologist Fred Glass tells The Big Z these types of tornadoes are difficult to predict, since they are not the product of a traditional thunderstorm.

The tornado appeared to be no more than 50 yards wide and on the ground for roughly one mile, crossing open farm fields and diminishing as a waterspout on the Illinois River.
