Lightning Safety Week

Story by WBGZ Radio

"When thunder roars, go indoors." It is that phrase that state officials hope will keep you safe this week: Lightning Safety Week in Illinois. Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the storm, so when you start hearing thunder, you need to get inside.

That, according to Illinois Emergency Management Spokesperson Patti Thompson. But if you’re outside and can’t find shelter?

Thompson comments

And while less than 10 percent of people who are struck by lighting are killed, many are seriously injured and suffer from long term effects like chronic pain, nerve damage and dizziness.
