More Corruption Alleged In Chicago

Story by WBGZ Radio

Two former Chicago politicians have been indicted on bribery charges. Chicago Alderman Ambrosio Medrano and former Cook County Commissioner Joseph Moreno allegedly agreed to receive kickbacks for using their clout to ensure Stroger Hospital purchased bandages from a disabled veterans-owned business in Lisle. The alleged scheme took place before Moreno sponsored an ordinance to benefit the same business.

Other complaints allege Medrano partnered with the owner of Nebraska-based Sav-Rx to use bribery and kickbacks to obtain business from an out-of-state hospital system. Moreno is also accused of accepting a five-thousand-dollar bribe to ensure development of a waste transfer station in suburban Cicero. Each bribery count carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and conspiracy to commit bribery carries a maximum prison term of five years. Five other people are named in the complaints, filed by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald just one day before he's set to leave office.
