In what is proving to be a move met with disdain by many lawmakers in the southern part of the state, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has used his amendatory veto powers to rewrite a bill dealing with ammunition purchases by licensed gun owners. Following his modifications, the bill now looks to ban ban assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines, but Alton State Representative Dan Beiser, a fellow Democrat, says Quinn's move has no traction.
Beiser says he thinks was simply seeking media attention, being the first and only governor to ask for this following the tragedy at a movie theater in Colorado. He says this is the second time in just a couple of weeks he has made an announcement just for the sake of attention.
When lawmakers return to Springfield on August 17, they are expected to deal with pension reform and the possible ouster of Chicago Representative Derrick Smith. He does not expect Quinn's proposal to receive much, if any discussion.
