Attempted Armed Robbery Arrest

Story by WBGZ Radio

A 44-year-old Godfrey man has been arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery after he allegedly tried to stick-up the Moto Mart on Godfrey Road last week.  Police say Terry D. Elsperman of the 5,600 block of Godfrey Road made his way behind the counter and pulled a knife on the clerk.  He ran out of the store and had a customer who was pumping gas call 911.

The customer provided a detailed description of the suspect, and the clerk provided details of what happened.  Madison County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Kris Tharp says the clerk acted appropriately.

Elsperman was later found in his room at the Redwood Motel, and Tharp says investigators recovered enough evidence to charge him with the crime.  Elsperman has a criminal history that includes a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon from 2003.  The clerk was not injured in the incident.  He is being held on $100,000 bond.
