Charities Benefit from Class Action

Story by WBGZ Radio

Sixteen charities in the St. Louis region, including several in the Riverbend, will benefit from a class-action lawsuit handled by a local law firm.  The $750,000 was handed out in checks totaling between $24,412 and $49,825 in a ceremony Friday morning at the Riverbender Community Center on Third Street in Alton.

Among the local recipients are the Riverbender Community Center, Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, the Community Hope Center, Riverbend Family Ministries, Operation Blessing and Hope Animal Rescue.  The proceeds are from unpaid portions of a settlement that was reached in 2006 with Hilton Hotels, according to Brad Lakin, a founding member of SL Chapman LLC.

Lakin comments

Lakin says his team, as well as the judge and Hilton Hotels, worked to redirect these non-allocated funds to worthwhile causes, all while waiving their attorneys fees and expenses for the six months of legal work required to accomplish this task.
