Temperatures have cooled significantly since the summer heat wave, and some in the Riverbend are already planning for stocking hat and winter coat weather. Alton's Forestry division has been in Rock Spring Park recently, cleaning up the dead and hanging branches, getting as much trimming done as they can before the Grandpa Gang takes over preparations for the Christmas Wonderland light display.
Alton Park & Recreation's Rhonda Lewis says they have been cleaning up the park, and addressing any trees that were compromised as a result of the drought.
Each fall, lights are either stolen or broken, and even displays have been damaged in the past, but last year the amount of vandalism was way down. Lewis credits that to many factors, including the installation of security cameras. Christmas Wonderland is scheduled to open on Friday, November 23.
