Mother Charged in Infant's Death

Story by WBGZ Radio

A North St. Louis woman has been charged in connection with the death of her infant son in Alton last week.  Police say the two-month-old died at a local hospital last week and the death has been ruled a homicide.   19-year-old Wallisha S. Bland (pictured), of the 1500 block of Beecher Drive, has been charged with 2 counts of 1st Degree Murder, and is being held without bond.

It was originally reported that she fell asleep with her son on a sofa, rolling over onto him.  Investigators now believe she threw her son to the floor, causing the fatal injuries, according to Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons.

Gibbons comments

The incident happened at an apartment in the 3,200 block of Belle Street last Thursday morning.  Jace Gillespie was pronounced dead a short time later at St. Anthony's Hospital.
