The City of Alton will have to make an emergency purchase of two computer servers and the peripheral equipment in the coming days, as the existing servers are crashing on an almost daily basis. The current equipment has been in service since Comptroller Stephanie Elliott has been in the office, which is now 13 years. The total outlay looks to be in the $50-60,000 range.
That includes all of the desktops at city hall and the police station, which is also experiencing the problems. Elliott addressed the Alton City Council this week and says this is truly an emergency.
There are provisions in the city code that allows the mayor to authorize an emergency purchase without council approval. She says there are four servers currently in use at city hall, but getting one new one as soon as possible can get them by until the others can be purchased.
