Senator Says Lawmakers Should Take Economics

Story by WBGZ Radio

One lawmaker wants all elected officials to take continuing education classes to maintain their professional knowledge.  Republican State Senator Dave Syverson of Rockford will introduce legislation that would require elected officials at the city, county and state levels to take eight hours worth of economics classes every two years.

He says the classes will help them understand the scope of the issues when they make budget decisions.  Syverson cites record pension debt, record backlog of unpaid bills, failed social programs, loss of jobs to other states, and the state's general economic malaise as the primary needs for an economics education.
