New Substation Taking Shape

Story by WBGZ Radio

It's been the cause of much speculation, but the project involving a concrete pad and construction equipment across from the former Dixon Distributing building in Godfrey will be a new Ameren substation.  The new North Alton Substation is scheduled to go in service June 1.  A company spokesman says it should be a seamless switch-over, and it is likely customers won't notice anything when it goes live.

This one will replace the existing substation that serves the area, according to Ameren Spokesman Leigh Morris.

Morris comments

He says substations are basically a series of transformers, which regulate the power being sent down the line to individual customers.  In this case, the voltages are being reduced before being sent out.
