Unsolved Murders Still Open

Story by WBGZ Radio

Of the five unsolved murders in Alton, only one has investigators stumped. In most cases, police have a good idea who is responsible for the crime, but lack witness cooperation or hard evidence to bring charges against a suspect. But a 16-year-old case in which a woman lost her life on an area shopping establishment parking lot is still baffling, according to Alton Police Chief David Hayes.

Hayes comments

Hayes says the other cases could be solved if witnesses were not afraid to come forward. Julianne Marie Gottlob died in 1986, found strangled in her home on Belle Street. Kristy Black was stabbed multiple times before her body was dumped near the boat launch area at Piasa Harbor in 2001. DaRon Hearn was fatally shot outside of the Oakwood Estates public housing complex in April of 2007, and Hayes says there are at least 7 witnesses who refuse to talk. There is no statute of limitations on murder, so if anyone knows anything about any of these cases, they are asked to call Alton Police at 463-3505, ext. 225, or the anonymous tip line at 465-5948.
