An accident on the Great River Road Sunday night has killed one man and sent a woman to a St. Louis area hospital with serious injuries. 28-year-old Randy T. Pate of Wood River and 36-year-old Cynthia J. King of Granite City were thrown from the motorcycle driven by Pate after contact with another vehicle. Pate died at the scene.
The accident happened in the southbound lanes of Illinois Route 100 (Great River Road) near Chautaqua Road just after 6:30pm Sunday. According to a report from the Illinois State Police, the motorcycle was closing on a car that was in the left-hand lane. The driver of the vehicle noticed the closing rate of the motorcycle, and began to switch lanes to get out of the way. As she was doing that, Pate also began switching lanes, and clipped the rear of the car. King was airlifted to St. John's Mercy Hospital with serious injuries. Neither were wearing helmets. The driver of the car was not injured, and according to police no charges are expected.
