Police Chief Resigns Amid Federal Investigation

Story by WBGZ Radio

Officials in the city of Edwardsville are scrambling to put together a search for new Chief of Police after former Director of Police James Bedell resigned on Friday afternoon amid a federal investigation.

In statement released on Friday, Mayor Gary Niebur called the investigation "troubling" and said that city officials will fully cooperate with agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Internal Revenue Service as they continue their investigation.

Major Don Lask will serve as the interim chief, but will not be named Bedell's full-time replacement after indicating he was not interested in the position. Lask has been with the department since 1975 and was most recently promoted to Deputy Chief with the rank of major in October 2002.
