On October 10, 1953 she married Thomas B. Carney in Cairo, Illinois. They moved to Salem, Illinois where she made a loving home for her family for 54 years. Dorothy's family knew her as a loving and caring supporter. Whether for a parent, husband, brother, child or grandchild, she continually showed her love through the many day-to-day interactions that made their lives better. Her friends and acquaintances will remember her as a kind person who was blessed with a keen and humorous wit. That wit helped brighten her days and the days of others and also provided something positive through the difficulties that life sometimes brings.
She enjoyed music and was a church choir member early in her life at Cairo Baptist Church and later as a handbell choir member at Grace United Methodist Church where she was most recently a member. In addition to music, she also appreciated many aspects of the fine arts, especially sculptures and paintings. She had a particular interest in Oriental arts including carvings and other pieces representing the culture. She enjoyed reading a variety of books and few crossword puzzles went unfinished - a testament to her persistent nature.
Graveside services at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens, Villa Ridge, Illinois, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mighty Rivers Regional Worship Center, 10th and Poplar, Cairo, Illinois 62914 either to their Music Ministry or their general needs.
