William Bernard Stobbs, 85, died July 6, 2012 at St. Clare’s Hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1926 in Alton, IL, the son of William J. and Anna G. (Walters) Stobbs.

He married Lena Frances “Tillie” Tillinghast on Feb. 13, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Church in Alton; she preceded him in death on July 6, 2010.

Surviving children are Dianne Wingerter, Alton; Sandra (Jerry) Austwick, Jacksonville, IL; John Stobbs, Wildwood, MO; Maryjane (Kirk) Million, Jacksonville, IL; his grandchildren Paul Wingerter, Andy (Heather) Austwick, Amy (Josh) Fink, Erin Stobbs, Atticus Bailey-Stobbs, Thackeray Bailey-Stobbs, August Bailey-Stobbs and Shane Million and great-grandchildren, Hannah Austwick, Tate Austwick, Caleb Bailey-Stobbs and Liam Bailey-Stobbs; as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, William A. Joseph Stobbs, his parents and sister, Elizabeth Ferguson. Bill was a United States Marine and a WWII veteran; he was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Church and he retired from Laclede Steel.

Bill chose to donate his body to medical science; Memorials are suggested to Saints Peter and Paul Church in Alton.
