College Football Bowl Games Update

The parade of college football bowl games continued Saturday, with all four bowl games on that date decided by ten points or less.

In the Tax Slayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, the Mississippi State Bulldogs held off a determined Louisville Cardinals squad to take the victory 31 to 27.

Next came the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The hometown Tigers battled the Iowa State Cyclones. The Tigers kept it close throughout, but in the end it was Iowa State 21, Memphis 20.

The Fiesta Bowl in Arizona saw the Penn State Nittany Lions storm out to a 28 to 6 lead in the first half, and then hold on for dear life as the Washington Huskies stormed back to within 7. At the finish, it was Penn State 35, Washington 28.

In the nightcap, the Hard Rock Stadium at Miami Beach hosted the Orange Bowl. The sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers outdueled the tenth-ranked Miami Hurricanes 34 to 24.

There are no college bowl games on the schedule for Sunday, but on New Year’s Day there are five games, including the Outback, Peach and Citrus Bowls, which lead up to the College Football Semi-Final Playoffs. In the first playoff, the Rose Bowl hosts the third-seeded Georgia Bulldogs and the second-seeded Oklahoma Sooners.

In the second playoff game, the Sugar Bowl sees number-four Alabama battle top-ranked Clemson. The winners of the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl meet January 8 in Atlanta for the National Championship.
